Shopping and dining out in Waycross are abundant for the Waycross apartment-ite with the Hatcher Point Mall Shopping Center and the Saltilla Square Shopping Center. If you want to get out and have a picnic, you can find a perfect place at Folks Park or Monroe Park.
A clever custom carried out by the police by the city of Waycross in the 1950's that may not be known to many was to stop occasional visitors with out-of-state license plates. They would be escorted to the city hall by the Welcome World Committee, and then given free lodging, dinner and a trip to the nearby Okefenokee Swamp. This had to be discontinued once the interstates were built, bypassing the city at great speeds.
Waycross was the birthplace of Burt Reynolds, home of Billy Carter, brother of President Jimmy Carter, and Gram Parsons, musician in the band The Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers.
